Director of Finance

The Postion

The Director of Finance will work closely with the Executive Director and Board(s) of Directors in determining long-term financial goals and developing strategies to achieve the financial objectives of Community Catalyst. This is a tremendous opportunity for a finance leader to maximize and strengthen the internal capacity of a well-respected organization. The Director will manage the organization’s financial operations, including oversight of accounts payable and receivable, budgeting, production of financial statements and reports, and advisement of the senior management team on financial decisions. The Director is responsible for monitoring and maintaining internal controls, while overseeing financial systems and related compliance requirements. The Director of Finance will report directly to the Executive Director as a strategic finance partner. 


   Finance and Accounting Operations 

  • Serve as organizational leader with all finance-related matters; Sr. Leadership, Board of Directors and Program Leaders 
  • Support the financial administration through financial modelingdata-driven analysis and the day to day operations
  • Lead financial strategy planning, budget development, and monitoring efforts in conjunction with Sr. Leadership and Board 
  • Join the Board Finance Committee; create agendas and engaging board members in executing their fiduciary responsibilities
  • Design and manage policies and procedures, internal controls, financial reporting mechanisms and audits to ensure compliance 
  • Implement best practices; ensures the integrity, accuracy and usefulness of all financial reports and data 
  • Oversee compliance with contracts and grant award specifications and additional external reporting 
  • Monitor, analyze, and report monthly operating results against budget; interpret financial data and make recommendations to support long term financial health
  • Supervise reporting systems ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements; accounting software meets organizational needs; test conversions, retain critical data and documentation 
  • Direct all audit activities as key liaison with auditing firm 
  • Execute and implement organization’s finance and accounting infrastructure (i.e.: management of accounts payable and receivable, fund tracking, etc.), including timely delivery of all mandated financial reports, managing cash flow and forecasting
  • Partner with program leaders to develop budgets, manage spending and make financial decisions  

Organizational and Team Leadership 

  • Collaborate with leadership team on finance operations and strategic issues as they arise; provide recommendations based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis
  • Participate in the  development and execution of organization-wide strategies 
  • Oversee annual budgeting process, partner with program teams on strategic decisions such as work planning and resource allocation
  • Serve as mentor and coach to accounting staff, delegating effectively and develop a high performing team 
  • Leverage the strengths of the finance staff by clarifying their roles and responsibilities while creating and promoting a positive and supportive work environment; serve as coach and mentor to develop a high performing team 
  • Partner with the leadership team to help advance the mission and values of the organization 
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization  

Professional Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or related field required; MBA/CPA preferred; 7-10 years progressive nonprofit finance experience
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee a multi-entity org;  working knowledge of GAAP, audits, regulatory requirements and compliance
  • Thought leader with a proven track record in providing guidance on organizational risks; opportunities and strategies 
  • Advanced technical skills; Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, etc..), QuickBooks, Cloud-Based Software; system implementation 
  • Proven track record in building financial health; building processes, systems and teams to support organizational innovation 
  • Strong communication skills; written and verbal; natural leader with exceptional collaborative skills 
  • Passion for the mission and work of Community Catalyst
