Position Summary

This position is responsible for providing tracking and program support to the Community Catalyst Policy & Strategy team. Collectively, these individuals are responsible for some of the organization’s most dynamic and fast-moving advocacy and policy initiatives. On any given day, the policy coordinator will be supporting fights to protect health care on the national front and advancing state-specific initiatives.

Along with tracking responsibilities this person will help write and edit memos and briefs for internal and external audiences, including funders and government officials and the board of directors. The successful candidate is someone who can assess priorities on the go, “manage up,” communicate directly, respond to time sensitive needs with poise, and work efficiently and effectively in a team atmosphere.

The person in this role must be creative and enjoy working in an environment that is mission-driven, results-driven and consumer/community oriented. The ideal individual will have the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, with strong written and verbal communication, and organizational skills, and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities. The Policy Coordinator will have the ability to work independently on projects and must be able to work under pressure at times to handle a wide variety of activities (e.g., funding proposals/reports, policy and press related documents) and confidential matters with discretion.

This position is included in a collective bargaining unit represented by a staff union, Community Catalyst United, and specific employment terms may be subject to a future Collective Bargaining Agreement. 

Supervision

The Policy Coordinator is supervised by the Deputy Director of Policy.

Responsibilities 

  • Provides program support to the Policy & Strategy Team. This support includes, for example, helping disseminate information across the organization, inputting meetings into Salesforce, tracking the organization’s support of legislation, sign-on letters, etc., and creating PowerPoint and other presentation documents.
  • Prepare materials for Congressional and Administrative meetings, including fact sheets and policy summaries.  
  • Assures team is well informed of upcoming commitments and responsibilities, following up appropriately. Acts as a “barometer,” having a sense for the issues taking place in the organization and keeping people updated.
  • Prioritizes conflicting needs; handles matters expeditiously, proactively, and follows-through on projects to successful completion, often with deadline pressures.
  • Help facilitate coordination between programs at Community Catalyst.  
  • Executes basic research on various health care policy and advocacy issues via on-line searches, reviewing hard-copy resources, interviewing colleagues and experts, summarizes findings and other strategies.
  • Writes policy memos and briefs when needed that requires reading and analyzing legislation, regulation or other technical documents.
  • Maintains confidentiality as this person has access to email and meetings that include sensitive information about organization structure, finances and personnel.
  • Perform other duties as necessary to achieve the goals of the department and organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors’ degree plus 1 year relevant work experience in health care policy, politics or related field or 3 years of relevant work experience in health care policy, politics or related field

  • Exceptionally organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Able to take initiative, process information quickly and make responsible decisions.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability and excitement to work independently as well as within a team.
  • Excellent follow-up and follow-through skills in a deadline driven environment.
  • Ability to work with people who have different work styles and anticipate needs before they arise (i.e., manage up).
  • Ability and interest to quickly learn about organizational operations, relevant policy issues and political events.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, web, and databases (e.g., experience with Salesforce strongly desirable, but not required).
  • Bilingual/bicultural background desirable, but not required.
  • Ability to travel 2 to 3 times per year.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $46,680 – $54,000
