WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the Senate moves toward a deal to reopen the government, millions of people continue to face a health care affordability crisis that is destabilizing families, communities, and the nation’s economy.

“Every day, people across this country are learning that the cost of their health care is skyrocketing,” said Mona Shah, Senior Director of Policy and Strategy at Community Catalyst. “Families are being forced to choose between putting food on the table and getting the care they need. Let’s be clear: this so-called ‘deal’ does absolutely nothing to help them.

“When people can’t afford care, the harm ripples far beyond the doctor’s office,” Shah continued. “Families fall into debt, small businesses lose workers, and communities lose economic stability. Health care affordability isn’t a moral imperative – it’s an economic one.“Congress must act to make the enhanced premium tax credits permanent, rein in predatory billing practices, and make health care a foundation of financial security, not a cause of financial ruin.”
