Washington, DC — Following yesterday’s press conference in which Senate Republicans signaled their alignment with Speaker McCarthy’s debt ceiling bill that could send millions of people across the country deeper into poverty by stripping health care and food programs away, Community Catalyst released the following statement.

Statement from Emily Stewart, Executive Director, Community Catalyst

“The GOP plan is only ‘common sense’ for giant corporations and the uber-wealthy. Raising the debt ceiling shouldn’t be an opportunity to jeopardize the health and well-being of millions of people by cutting access to affordable health care and nutritious food. Balancing the federal budget on the backs of older adults, people with disabilities, children and people with low incomes would be disastrous, and we urge Congress to pass a clean debt ceiling bill with no cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF.”
