WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following the Senate vote on their budget resolution, Mona Shah, Senior Director of Policy and Strategy at Community Catalyst, released the following statement:

“It is disappointing to see Senate Republicans follow the House’s lead and support a budget resolution that would massively cut Medicaid, putting the health care of tens of millions of older adults, kids and people with disabilities at risk. Cutting vital health care programs in favor of tax breaks for billionaires and corporations is deeply concerning and goes against what people want.

“While we have seen some in the Senate and House offer assurances that they can meet steep spending cuts without jeopardizing health care coverage, the math is simply impossible. There is no way to hit the targets of what the House and now Senate have proposed without taking people’s health care away in service of extending tax cuts for corporations.

“The real impact of these devastating cuts will be on the millions of families who rely on Medicaid for essential, life-saving care—including rural communities, families with low incomes, and people with disabilities. This includes women and children who rely on Medicaid for critical preventive care, such as cancer screenings and maternity care, particularly in states where Medicaid expansion has helped keep rural hospitals open and reduced infant mortality.

“We should be demanding corporations pay their fair share in taxes, not giving them tax breaks at the expense of our health and economic well-being. We will join with the local, state and national organizations across the country in a unified voice to ensure policymakers understand the very real impacts the cuts would have on the people they serve.”
