“By allowing states to block trusted health care providers like Planned Parenthood from Medicaid, the Court has opened the door for more people to be denied essential care—not because of what’s best for their health, but because of politics.”

Washington, D.C. — In response to today’s Supreme Court ruling allowing states to block Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid funding, Community Catalyst issued the following statement:

Statement from Mona Shah, Senior Director of Policy and Strategy at Community Catalyst:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision strikes at the heart of what we all want for ourselves and the people we love—care we can trust and afford, in the moments we need it most.

“By allowing states to block trusted health care providers like Planned Parenthood from Medicaid, the Court has opened the door for more people to be denied essential care—not because of what’s best for their health, but because of politics. That’s not just unfair—it’s harmful.

“This ruling will make it harder for people with low incomes, especially Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and rural communities, to find providers who understand them and meet their needs. Medicaid is the foundation of care for millions. When we chip away at it—when we narrow the choices people have for things like birth control, cancer screenings, and prenatal care—we deepen the very inequities we should be working to close.

“At its core, this is about whether people can care for themselves and their families with dignity. Whether someone can get to a provider who listens, who is in their community. Whether they can avoid the crushing burden of medical debt. Whether they’re free to make decisions about their health without political interference.

“We’re holding fast to the belief that everyone deserves access to care that supports their health, their families, and their future. We will keep fighting to protect and strengthen Medicaid—not just as a program, but as a promise that no one should be denied care because of who they are, where they live, or how much they make.”
