Groups Say Extension Of Tax Credits Should Be Part Of Any Government Funding Spending Deal
BOSTON, MA – More than 350 groups across the country signed on to a letter, led by Community Catalyst, urging Congress to take immediate action to make enhanced premium tax credits permanent, before they expire later this year and to repeal historic health care cuts included in the reconciliation package.
The groups are demanding that a clean extension of the vital Affordable Care Act premium tax credits be included in any government funding deal.
You can see the letter, signed by the Small Business Majority, the Private Equity Stakeholder Project, Americans for Tax Fairness, SEIU, and more, here.
“Time is ticking and Congress’ failure to include the extension of these critical tax credits in the reconciliation package has put additional financial pressure on millions of people throughout the country and pushed our health care system to a crisis point,” said Mona Shah, Senior Director of Policy and Strategy at Community Catalyst. “For many people, these tax credits are the difference between having health insurance or not. They can not afford to wait any longer while Washington plays politics as usual. Congress must include these marketplace tax credits in any deal to fund the government and bring much needed relief to millions across the country.”
If Congress fails to act quickly to make the tax credits permanent, premiums will spike in 2026, family budgets will collapse under the pressure, and costs will rise for everyone. When millions lose coverage and can’t pay hospital bills, those uncompensated care costs shift onto insured families and small businesses, driving up prices across the entire system. Failing to pass an extension would also make the existing medical debt crisis worse and leave more people vulnerable to predatory practices – like deferred interest credit cards.
The organizations emphasized that extending enhanced premium tax credits is essential to keeping health coverage affordable. Without them, our insured rates will skyrocket. These credits currently help more than 20 million people afford health insurance on ACA marketplaces, saving the average person about $700 each year. And led to the lowest number of uninsured people ever last year. For Jason, a freelance illustrator in Pennsylvania, the credits made insurance affordable enough to get treatment that helped him beat thyroid cancer.
Recent polling from Community Catalyst found that rising health care costs are a top concern for voters and they want more government intervention, like the premium tax credits, to help lower costs. You can see the polling here.
