Hailing from Washington, DC, U. Michael Currie most recently served as the Chief Health Equity Officer at UnitedHealth Group. In this role, Michael led the development and coordination of efforts to advance health equity at UnitedHealth Group with line of business and market health plan leaders, as well as C-suite executives, from June of 2010 until retirement, October 2023. He oversaw the development and execution of enterprise efforts, initiatives and interventions to identify health disparities, along with the enhancement or implementation of programs, services and strategies to address identified health disparities.
Michael has held health department roles at both a local and state level, as well as private sector health management roles with responsibilities related to health benefits, disease prevention and health promotion. Virtually every role he has had over his nearly 30 year career has been focused on population health management.
Michael has contributed to numerous health equity and health disparities related articles and publications, and has been a guest lecturer at a host of public and private organizations, as well as numerous academic institutions.
He has served over the years on numerous local and national boards and committees focused on addressing barriers to health care and improving health outcomes including the Maryland Department of Health Advisory Committee on Minority Health and the Health Care Payment Learning & Action Network Health Equity Advisory Team.
He currently provides strategic operational, program planning and fiscal direction on the Creating Healthier Communities Board of Directors (Finance Committee), while also serving on the Howard Community College Educational Foundation Board and the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center Foundation Board. Furthermore, Michael was appointed in November 2025 by State of Maryland Governor Wes Moore to serve as a Commissioner on the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Morehouse College, a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from George Washington University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Johns Hopkins University.
