A Treasure Trove of Resources on Providing Better Care for Older Adults
This year’s Older Americans Month (#OAM19) theme, “Connect, Create, Contribute,” fittingly celebrates the participation of older adults in their communities. But, as we all know, without good health, it’s quite difficult for older adults to engage in activities in their neighborhoods or with their friends or family.
So, during this, the final week of Older Americans Month (#OAM19), we’re lifting up some very rewarding work we’ve been doing at the Center to support better health care for older adults and their family caregivers. Over the last several years, we’ve had the wonderful opportunity to partner with the Medicare-Medicaid Coordination Office and The Lewin Group to develop a rich body of resources for providers and plans that provide care to older adults.
The Geriatric-Competent Care (GCC) webinar series helps providers in all settings and disciplines expand their knowledge and skills related to the unique aspects of caring for older adults and working with their caregivers. The webinars are also intended for frontline community partners and delivery staff such as care managers, member service representatives, and home care providers.
These webinars afford viewers the opportunity to learn from national leaders in geriatrics and gerontology and hear examples of best practices. And, as a bonus, almost all of the webinars offer free continuing education credits through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) just for viewing!
Here is a brief list of just some of the titles in the Geriatric-Competent Care Library:
- Geriatric Assessment
- Person-Centered Approaches to Support People Dually Eligible for Medicare and Medicaid
- Care Transitions to and from the Hospital for Individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias
- Involving and Supporting Family Caregivers in Care Planning And Delivery
- Promising Practices for Meeting the Behavioral Health Needs of Dually Eligible Older Adults
- Supporting Older Adults with Substance Use Disorders
- Palliative Care for Older Adults Dually Eligible for Medicare and Medicaid
- Falls Prevention for Older Adults
- Safe and Effective Use of Medications in Older Adults
We encourage you to check out these archived resources and to tune in to our upcoming live webinars, for which we’ll also be offering social work and nursing continuing education credits in addition to those available from CMS:
- Delivering Dementia Capable Care Within Health Plans: Why And How? (June 19, 2019)

- Building Cultural Competence Among Direct Care Workers (date coming soon!)
Older Americans Month may be winding down for 2019, but here’s to improving older adults’ health throughout the year to better enable them to #ConnectCreateContribute!
