How Medicaid Powers Independence: Corinne’s Story
Meet Corinne
Corinne Brown is an individual on the autism spectrum with additional diagnoses of generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and attention deficit disorder. Despite these challenges, she thrives in her career and lives independently in her community— all made possible through Medicaid-funded supports.
For Corinne, Medicaid isn’t just health care coverage. It provides a critical lifeline that bridges the gap between having a disability and being able to succeed in the workplace and live on her own terms.
Supporting Independence Through Essential Services
For Corinne, Medicaid provides two vital services: a job coach and attendant care. Without her job coach, Corinne’s career was crumbling as employers struggled to understand her disability. Now, with proper workplace support, she succeeds professionally while her attendant care empowers her daily independence at home.
Corinne doesn’t qualify for supplementary security income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), yet needs specific supports to work full-time. Medicaid bridges this critical gap, enabling her to be employed and independent rather than unemployed or institutionalized.
“I don’t want to be homeless, in a catch-22, or in a group home,” Corinne explains. “In order for me to work, I need a job coach, which Medicaid pays for.”
A Cut to Medicaid is a Cut to Someone’s Independence
With Republicans in Congress threatening to slash $2.5 trillion dollars from Medicaid— just to pay for tax cuts for billionaires and greedy corporations— Corinne and millions of people with disabilities, chronic conditions, older adults, children and low-income earners are at risk of having their health care taken away.
Without the supports Medicaid provides, millions of people could become homeless or be forced into a group home setting, losing both their independence and their ability to be part of their communities.
Corinne’s story demonstrates why Medicaid matters. It’s not just a health care program—it’s a vital support system that enables independence, employment, and dignity for millions of people with disabilities.
