Community Catalyst Welcomes Former Health and Human Services Official to its Board of Directors
Anton Gunn brings 20 years of local and federal health policy and advocacy work to
Community Catalyst

BOSTON – Anton Gunn, Chief Diversity Officer of the Medical University of South Carolina Health Center, has joined Community Catalyst’s Board of Directors. Gunn previously worked as Director of External Affairs for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Gunn brings a wealth of health care policy and advocacy experience to Community Catalyst. As a senior official in the Obama Administration, he advised President Barack Obama and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on public engagement strategies to implement the Affordable Care Act. Prior to that, he worked as an HHS Regional Director based in Atlanta. Gunn previously served in the South Carolina House of Representatives, where he was the first African American elected to represent his district.

“We’re very fortunate to have Anton join our board,” said Community Catalyst Executive Director Rob Restuccia. “He has intersected with the health care policy world at every level – as a community and state advocate, a legislator, a federal policymaker, and now as someone working within the health delivery system. This gives him a unique perspective that is tremendously helpful to Community Catalyst as we focus much of our work on the next phase of health reform, health system transformation.”

Gunn’s relationship with Community Catalyst began in 1996 when he participated in advocacy training to prepare him for a job building a team of local health leaders in South Carolina to advocate for change in their community.

“I’ve seen firsthand Community Catalyst’s impact helping state organizations become effective advocates on health issues and its success in representing consumer interests at the federal level,” Gunn said. “I hope my work in the South, in particular, will be very valuable to Community Catalyst’s efforts to address the unique health challenges of Americans living in the South.”
