(BOSTON, MA) – Today, President-Elect Joe Biden announced he will nominate California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to serve as the next Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Statement of Emily Stewart, executive director of Community Catalyst, in response to the nomination.
“In Attorney General Becerra, President-Elect Biden has chosen a champion of people’s health and well-being to serve as the next Secretary of Health and Human Services. As a member of Congress, Attorney General Becerra fought tirelessly to protect and expand access to quality, affordable health care. As attorney general for California, he has continued that fight in the courts on behalf of millions of people by defending their access to coverage and care under the Affordable Care Act. As Secretary of Health and Human Services, Attorney General Becerra would bring a deep commitment to health equity and racial justice, which is more important than ever as the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed vast inequities deeply embedded in our health care system. Becerra is a proven leader who will take aggressive action to mitigate the harm of the pandemic and work to ensure our health system serves all people.”
“We congratulate Attorney General Becerra on his nomination, and look forward to working together to build back better our health system so it provides equitable access to high-quality health care and good health.”
