Medicaid Matters: Maternal Health
Did you know 40% of U.S. births are covered by Medicaid? Medicaid is the largest source of funding for pregnancy-related care nationwide. This includes prenatal care and childbirth, well-child visits, reproductive health and birth control, cancer or STD screenings, miscarriage, postpartum care and more.
Medicaid is a state and federal health coverage program for children and adults with low incomes, as well as many people with disabilities and people over the age of 65. Additionally, Medicaid serves as a critical safety net and resource for maternal and reproductive health. This includes women with part-time and full-time jobs that do not offer health insurance or where their primary insurance has coverage gaps.
When compared to similar nations, the U.S. has the highest rates of infant and maternal deaths. Medicaid is an important lifeline, helping women and families receive the care they need.
